Berlin v Munich Kebabs
Kebabs are sacred in Germany, like paperwork and being passive aggressive. Also, they are very very tasty filling street food, maybe the most famous street food in the world. They were thought to have actually been invented in Berlin. However, there is no real evidence for this as they have been in Turkey since the mid 19th century.
Germany is divided by a lot, classic old school division East v West, also, Munich v Berlin is a thing here in Germany. Munich is the richer, cleaner, safer city in the south. Berlin, alternative, scruffy in the north east. I happen to live in Munich, and I’ve spent a lot of time in Berlin, and this taught me I like Hamburg. Both cities have developed a dislike for each other over time. I suspect this runs a lot deeper than money, and involves past history (something for another time).
However, I want to talk about kebabs. As street food goes they are amazing. People who come to visit from other countries love them. Living in Munich, I know very well what kebabs are like here, but what about Berlin?
I was in Berlin recently doing a number of comedy gigs. So of course I wanted to try the local kebab. And damn it’s different. Loads more meat, spicier chilli sauce, and not much salad. In Munich it’s lots and lots of salad, and not so much meat. Could this be influenced by the cities they are in? Munich, leaner, healthier, but less meat. Berlin, bigger, spicier and definitely not healthy.
I have to say the Berlin kebabs were a lot lot better. Some places it’s so big it’s basically two meals, and nothing more delicious than half a microwaved kebab for breakfast the next day. Truly, the breakfast of champions.
It got me thinking, kebab as a health food option or pure filling spicy filth after a few beers? Being British, I went for the filth. Also, kebabs were the same price. Much like the rents now, sadly Berlin is getting gentrified as well.Tragic. Is there anywhere truly alternative and affordable left? At least after nuclear war the rents will be cheaper. Gotta look on the bright side!
Cheers,
Daniel
